President's Report - December 2009
News › President's Report - December 2009
by Greg Bayne
Complacency. We have all been guilty of it. Recent events over the summer rammed this word to me many times. CKP has been found. Well the truth is that he was never lost, just mislaid. And it was all our fault. It appears that we may well have hundreds of other graves, buildings, sites and facts that are waiting to be rediscovered. Hence the decision by the Committee to support the Index Project. Quite simply, we want to produce a tome of CW sites in the UK with an accompanied description. A sort of Michelin Guide for CW buffs and American Tourists. Clearly Liverpool will feature strongly but I know there will be surprises. I often have an after school tiffin at the Royal Hotel in Deal where ... well you will have to wait for that piece of information. We will shortly be calling for volunteers to bring this together.
Over 60 members attended Lincoln in Oxford and what a great weekend it was. Not just Craig Symonds and Len Reidel, but Jeremy Edwards, Jeremy Mindell, Charles Rees and Erick Bush who all added to our knowledge of Lincoln. Plus a seamless weekend courtesy of Peter Lockwood. It was a shame that they had to put up with my silly jokes. Still, at least I made a few more friends.
Next year we have a full schedule for you plus a special weekend planned for September. Details are still being formalised but in conjunction with the Blue and Grey Educational Society we will hosting a conference at Sandhurst.
We are also planning a much bigger event in April 2011. A weekend conference with major headline speakers. Again we haven't much to hang our hats onto but we have as it is the start of the 150th anniversaries, there will be no prizes for guessing what the theme might be. We are also looking for sponsorship of the event which I hope will be our biggest and best to date.
Thanks to all the members present at the AGM who voted the present Committee back in. I have (if you want me to) pledged another two years as President, hopefully to see the major projects through to fruition.
It is also membership renewal time. I know that the vast majority of you will renew, if only because of the strong bonds you have for this period of history. In order for this Society to grow we need new members and I would urge all of you to spread the word.
See you in the new year. ‹ Back to News
