President's Report - August 2009

News › President's Report - August 2009

by Greg Bayne

The beauty of this organisation is that people are always keen to share their ideas, views and news. David Kirkpatrick emailed and said "What are we doing for the 150th?" Naturally I thought "Great Idea" and started the ball rolling by immediately tasking him to put some ideas together (that will teach him!) but the clarion call needs to be sounded now. The first shots were fired in 1861, but the troubles really started in 1860 so next year is when the British general public will start to become more aware of the American Civil War. So all of us need to be ambassadors, not just for the Round Table whose objectives are to promote interest in the Civil War but much wider where we need educate and inform people about the Civil War.

I am convinced that Britain's role in the War of Northern Aggression will be told and retold so we need to be ready to tell the stories on the dates of the major events. Newspapers, magazines, radio and dare I say television will be looking for stories and you are the experts. So dust off those old notes and be prepared to enter the debate. We must not miss these opportunities.

Will you be our friend? Go to our new Facebook site that has been created by John Laskey. It baffles me but I signed up (please be my friend too!) and posted some comments on the site. The beauty is that is replaces the cumbersome forum concept that we had on our old website. So go and have a look and join up.

I have included some membership brochures with this issue. Just to remind you that we still need to grow our membership so take the opportunity to pass them onto interested people. If you are going to an event or museum that you think could stock them then please ask me for more.

Finally you will doubtless be pleased to learn that my personal field trip experience was all the greater for not losing my keys this year. Dunkirk next year - the 70th anniversary - see I told you these anniversaries were important!
